I recently had an exceptionally good cup of hot chocolate. Like the Judie Dench scene in Chocolat, I just enjoyed my cup of chocolate and all the problems dropped away.. no worries about Christmas shopping, work, or the daily grind. Just me and my hot chocolate.
Not your average warm and quick hot choc, this cup was filled to the brim. Thick dark chocolate that stuck to the sides, and a pleasant sprinkle of Cayenne pepper and cinnamon, my stop for hot chocolate turned into a meal of the best kind, decadent and just a little too much.
I asked for the recipe.. but as with most delicious things the recipe was kept secret as the the pleasant concoctress of my hot chocolate feigned to be hard of hearing when I asked. No worries though, I will be expirementing, but the recipes I have tried so far, while extremely good have not quite meausured up. The closest I have found is :
Super-Thick Hot Chocolate - Recipe courtesy of Anne Burrell
Prep : 7 min Yield : 4 drinks Level : Easy
3 cups whole milk
1 cup evaporated milk
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
Pinch of Cayenne
Pinch of ground cinnamon
In a saucepan, combine the whole milk, evaporated milk and vanilla and warm up over low heat.
Combine the cocoa powder, sugar, cornstarch and cinnamon in a bowl. Whisk the cocoa mixture into the warm milk mixture until smooth. Bring to a boil, whisking frequently to prevent it from scorching.
Remove the hot chocolate from the heat just after it has come to a boil. The mixture should be super rich and thick!
